A MAN from The Basin will face court after allegedly snatching a woman’s handbag at a Boronia venue earlier this month and stealing money from it.
An 88-year-old woman was in a gaming room around noon on Wednesday 7 September. While there, she was allegedly being watched by a 26-year-old The Basin man.
When leaving the venue, the man allegedly snatched the elderly woman’s handbag, which contained a large sum of money and personal effects, including her deceased husband’s jewellery and pushed her to the ground before running away.
The venue’s staff rushed to the assistance of the woman, who uses a walking frame, and called police.
Knox Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detectives investigated the crime and, after speaking to venue staff, found the man back at the venue on Friday 16 September.
The man told police where he disposed of the bag, and it and the jewellery were recovered – but the cash was taken.
The man has been charged with robbery and was bailed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court at a later date.
