Walking for the OAM

Robert Goodwin is very much at home when walking the many tracks around the Dandenong Ranges.

The CFA member of almost 30 years and avid bushwalker was recognised in the Queen’s Birthday honour list 2018 for his service to the community, particularly through emergency response organisations.

Having worked with the Ferny Creek Scouts as a team leader, and as a search and rescue field organiser with the Search and Rescue Federation of Victorian Walking Clubs, Mr Goodwin has dedicated a large portion of his life to the wider community over 45 years.

Talking to the ‘Mail’, he said he was stunned and surprised at received a Medal of the Order of Australia, though felt there were many other people just as worthy in the Dandenong Ranges.

“I was heavily involved with scouts and adventures in Ferny Creek … I enjoyed walking with them as a scout leader for many years,” he said.

“Many other people within the hills have done just as much as I’ve done and deserve this award just as much as I do.

“It’s been an enjoyable thing for me to do … it hasn’t been an arduous task and I’ve met some wonderful people.”
