A FAULTY television is believed to have sparked a fire that destroyed a house in The Basin last week.
It took three fire trucks, a support vehicle and 15 firefighters to extinguish the blaze after a television left on standby mode malfunctioned.
Fire fighters entered the premise wearing breathing apparatuses, but no one was inside.
Both Boronia and The Basin CFA units worked to contain the fire, however upon their arrival it had already consumed the front living room area.
Despite the CFA’s efforts, smoke and radiant heat had caused significant damage to the rest of the house.
Nobody was harmed in the fire.
The Basin CFA captain Colin Killian urged people to turn their appliances off from its main switch, or from the wall power point as power was still present in the unit if left on standby.
He took the opportunity to remind people of the importance of smoke detectors in homes.
“It’s a timely reminder to all families of the importance of having functioning smoke alarms outside each bedroom, as well as other rooms in your home,” he said.
