AUSTRALIA’S next generation of national basketball players dominated the early rounds of the 2006 King Club International Cup on the weekend with both the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and the Big V Youth Select teams winning comfortably.
Standing at 212cm, West Australian Daniel Johnson led the AIS to victories on Saturday against Singapore (116-64) and the Knox Raiders (94-56), compiling 41 points across both games.
The average age of the AIS is under 18, highlighting the strength of Australia’s future stars. Be prepared to hear more about the likes of Ben Louis, Ben Dowdell and Cameron Gliddon.
The Big V also produced a clean sweep on the opening day, accounting for the two international teams with ease; first up against Sri Lanka (147-39), followed by an impressive win against Singapore (94-50).
Like the AIS, the Big V team is young, quick and talented. Capably led by Dandenong coach Kent Lockhart, the representative outfit was due to play the AIS and Knox Raiders on Sunday, which will determine their standing for a tilt at the gold medal.
Knox Raiders got off to a flying start with a big win against Sri Lanka (102-39) thanks largely to the efforts of Adrian Haines (20pts), Sean Carroll (13pts) and Matt Smyth (13pts), however, that soon changed once they met the might of the AIS.
Despite losses on the first day, both Sri Lanka and Singapore settled in well to their new surrounds and enjoyed the level of basketball. The international guests were due to clash on Sunday night, with the result likely to determine which team progresses through to the finals.
