AFTER finishing in the top eight of the 80 sides comprising the Victorian Metropolitan Division four bowls competition, Upwey-Tecoma took on the division favourites Footscray-Yarraville at the Burwood District grass greens last Saturday.
Playing before a very vocal and partisan club-mates’ crowd, the Upwey-Tecoma side had every chance to record an upset win.
With the scores level at the halftime break, a great second half was anticipated and the players did not let their supporters down.
With scores fluctuating throughout the match, Upwey-Tecoma hit the front with just five ends to play.
After finishing their game with a six shots win, Tom Perry and his team joined the supporters in urging their teammates on.
The Andrew Walters skippered rink finished strongly to win their last two ends.
Robin Southern and team were having a great battle with their opponents but unfortunately lost two ends with multiple scores.
The last rink to finish was that of Trevor Robertson who, although finishing with a big win, the score-line at the finish was not enough to win the match.
The Upwey-Tecoma side was glorious in defeat going down by just five shots.
Results: Upwey-Tecoma lost to Footscray-Yarraville 91-96. (Tom Perry 26-20, Trevor Robertson 26-12, Andrew Walters 17-32, Robin Southern 22-32).
