Twirling ignites a brand new passion

IN A smouldering fusion of flames, dance and rhythm, a new Dandenong Ranges Music Council (DRMC) program has emerged to ignite the creative fire of the hills community.
The Blazing Rhythm project, an initiative of the Circus Folk division of the DRMC, invites people to express themselves through the artistry of fire twirling.
Instructors from Cirque Mystique will lead a series of workshops beginning on Thursday night at Burrinja in Upwey.
As well as teaching the skills and choreography elements of fire twirling, the sessions will address the importance of safety and suitable equipment.
Program spokeswoman Marina Dennis said that community perceptions about the danger of fire twirling have traditionally hampered its recognition as a legitimate artform.
“The idea was to make it possible for fire twirling to be recognised as an artistic, creative activity and to give them the opportunity to perform in the wider community,” Ms Dennis said.
After honing their skills in the workshops, participants will be invited to perform at Fire Nights gatherings in Belgrave during May and June.
These group performances will incorporate drumming and dancing in a celebration of fire and rhythm.
The first workshop will commence at 7pm on Thursday, 12 April at Burrinja, 351 Glenfern Road, Upwey.
