MACCLESFIELD Primary School students are helping to save one of Australia’s most precious resources – water.
The students recently completed a State Government water conservation program run by Yarra Valley Water (YVW) – Learn it! Live it!
The program teaches students from grade prep to year 10 about the importance of water conservation.
Macclesfield Primary School is also one of the first schools in the Shire of Yarra Ranges to benefit from a new and unique community water tanker program.
The program uses special tankers to capture, carry and distribute drinkable water to community assets.
The school also received a 12,000-litre water donation to use on its sports oval, which was captured by YVW during mains flushing necessary to address water quality.
YVW managing director Tony Kelly said it was great to see Macclesfield Primary School benefiting from both the water tanker donation and the conservation education program.
School principal John Chiswell said the education program has helped the school to incorporate water conservation into the school curriculum and help make students more conscious of the problems involving the current water storages.
“We are very proud of our new accreditation as a water saving school,” he said. “The students were also thrilled to see the big tankers turn up to water the school oval which, like many across the country, has also suffered during the drought.”
