Hawks survive Olinda assault

MONBULK escaped with the points, but Olinda took the glory as the neighbours played out a traditional hard-fought local derby at a cold and slippery Monbulk Reserve.
Despite languishing at the bottom of the ladder, Olinda emerged with honour intact against the power of the Hawks, dominating the second quarter and frightening the life out of Monbulk in the process.
Monbulk exploded out of the blocks, banging on six goals to nil in the opening term and looked set to wipe the floor with the Bloods until Tregonning, Skenderis, Willoughby and Broomhall incited a four-goal Olinda assault that closed the gap to just 20 points at the midway point.
The Hawks copped a lashing from coach Chris Hughson and responded by restricting Olinda to one further goal for the game, but the Bloods were hardly overawed, making the Hawks fight for every score in the rain.
Mick Hughson, Matt Whitty and Vin Dunstan guided the younger Hawks through Olinda’s assault, eventually leading them to a 65-point victory, but it was Olinda who won the plaudits of the crowd.

Best: M. Hughson, M. Whitty, V. Dunstan, D. Taylor, S. Van Seters.

Reserves
SUFFERING from lack of numbers, Olinda ‘borrowed’ some Monbulk players in order to field a team, effectively keeping the fixture alive while providing the players with a game.
Monbulk dominated from the outset, with Broekhof, Coen and Liebe cleaning up anything loose around the packs, while up forward Brooks and young Shaun Lucas kept the Bloods defence busy.
Monbulk steadily built an imposing score, but the Bloods are to be congratulated on their spirit and willingness to provide a game.
Monbulk 21.23.149 d Olinda-Ferny Creek 2.2.14.
Best: S. Wentworth, C. Coen, C. Broekhof, S. Liebe, R. Mitchell.

Netball
A NEW-look Monbulk arrested their ignominious slide with a telling win over Olinda-Ferny Creek.
Renee Dekker and Jamie Sands lead the surge for The Hawks, who were keen to atone for recent poor form. Shutting down the Bloods’ forwards, the Hawks constantly drove forward to Jamie Sands and Jo Rutherford who were dominating the ring to give Monbulk a 58-11 victory over their neighbours.
