Fight to cut speed

By EMMA SUN AND MELISSA MEEHAN

A FATAL car accident has reignited a Silvan man’s fight to have the speed limit lowered along Queens Road and surrounding streets.
Frank Roskam contacted the Mail after news of a fatal single car accident on Parker Road travelling towards Seville broke on Thursday morning.
The accident, which occurred at 9.15pm on Wednesday night, saw a 29-year-old Woori Yallock man killed after he lost control of the Subaru he was driving, mounted an embankment and snapped a power pole and rolled numerous times.
Monbulk’s Leading Senior Constable Peter Edyvane said police were still working out how the man lost control of his vehicle.
“It appears excessive speed was a factor,” Ldg Sen Const Edyvane said.
“Parker Road was blocked off for about three hours and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
“It’s a message to those who drive too fast – the consequences can be fatal.”
Resident Frank Roskam said he tried to get the speed limit reduced on Queens Road, Parker Road and Hunter Road three years ago.
“Nothing happened,” he said.
“Two years ago a light pole was taken out by a driver. Yesterday, another fatality.
“It’s sad I have to hammer VicRoads that speed reductions are needed, or to get some maintenance done on the roads.”
Mr Roskam said if he looked at similar roads in the areas it would be easy to see a number of fatalities have occurred.
“I reckon the speed limit from the roads cause them,” he said.
“The attitude from people is that 80 is safe to drive and sometimes they drive even faster – that’s what they do.
“We need to get something sorted, three years down the track and still nothing has happened.”
Mr Roskam said he would continue to call on Vic Roads to reduce the speed limit.
“Speed reduction is a step in the right direction.”
“It’s not acceptable the way it is.”
