AFTER an exciting Round 1, where close results were the order of the day, Round 2 in DJ Strachan Shield produced some more one-sided results.
The close game of the round involved Woori Yallock hosting the travelling Coldstream.
Both sides were involved in games that went down to the last over of the day, and fans from both sides were left with hearts in their mouths.
The visitors opened up proceedings with the bat and compiled a solid 8/155 on the quick Woori Yallock Reserve.
Unsung opener Stephen Phillips anchored proceedings early with 31, while Matt Jonson (34) and Matt Stark (31no) ensured the innings had some momentum to the finish.
Jackson Wright proved that pace can be a factor in the valley leading the bowling for the Tigers with 3/29, captain Daniel Mock made a contribution with the ball for a second week in a row taking 2/19, while Ryan Smith capitalised on his bowlers’ work taking a magnificent six catches behind the stumps.
In reply, Woori Yallock were always in the hunt but just could not shake the fall of regular wickets.
Just as batsmen would get themselves in, their wicket would fall, leaving a new batsman to pick up the pieces.
This inability would ultimately cost the Tigers, as a host of players scored in the 20s, leaving the hosts two runs short after the last ball was bowled.
Jarrod Bayliss (2/41) and youngster Ryan Vaux (2/16) lead another even Crocs performance with the ball.
Seville hosted Warburton-Millgrove and for the first time in many seasons they were completely wiped off the park by a more committed Burras line-up.
Batting first, the Blues’ innings never hit any great heights as they were skittled for a sub-par 95.
The visitors were well led with the ball from promising youngster Connor Loughan with impressive figures of 4/35.
The most surprising was the final results as the Burras eased their way to the victory target without any great wobbles against the much vaunted Blues attack.
Liam Barnard (46) and Garrett Morris (37no) ensured the visitors would continue their unbeaten start with the loss of just one wicket.
Healesville hosted Hoddles Creek and made sure to get back in the winner’s circle with a relatively comfortable victory against a dogged Wombats line-up.
The Bloods opened up the batting and it was experienced stars Jonny Heywood (79) and Geoff Stock (52) who made light work of the early going racing the home side to a decisive advantage.
The young Wombat’s bowling attack could not suppress the experience of the pair as they completely controlled the contest.
Late wickets made things more respectable for the visitors however the total of 8/187 would be hard to chase.
The Wombats have always taken pride in not giving their wickets cheaply, and batted accordingly.
Luke Hetherington (36) and Simon Garside (25) ensured the visitors had a fighting chance however the Wombat’s big guns could not make any significant contributions when the whips got cracking, and the chase fell well short on 9/134.
Moore (4/41) was the best of the Bloods bowlers, while Scott Hamer provided a valuable cameo taking 2/2.
In the final game of the round, Mount Evelyn travelled to Yarra Junction, and despite a below par effort in the field, managed to comfortably account for the Eagles.
Batting first, the Eagles made a steady start against some good bowling as captain David Lever (40) kept the score ticking over.
With the fall of Lever just before drinks, things stalled for the home side as disciplined bowling and regular wickets left the Eagles starring down the barrel of a mediocre total.
For the second game in a row, Cam Spaulding lifted his team to a defendable total with a hard hitting 58 not out as the home team posted a challenging score of 6/148.
Brad Jones’s sustained spell at the top of the innings netted 3/19 as he led all bowlers.
In reply, the Rovers cautiously went about their business through the first 10 overs against some frugal bowling.
With the fall of two quick wickets to the spin of Daniel Lever, the game looked to be heading in favour of the home team.
Brad Jones still at the wicket combined with brothers, Kane (42) and Luke (22 not out), to launch a brutal and calculated attack on the hapless bowlers that saw the visitors race from 2/25 in the 10th over to the victory target over the next 20 overs.
Brad Jones completed a man of the match performance finishing on 85 not out as he led his team to victory with 11 overs to spare.
