POLICE are investigating the circumstances in which an Upwey house was gutted by fire last Saturday night, 10 November.
The house on Alexander Avenue was engulfed by flames around 11pm, with 25 firefighters from the Upwey, Belgrave, Upper Ferntree Gully and Sassafras brigades responding to a call from a nearby resident.
Upwey Fire Brigade captain Peter Marke said the blaze had taken hold before the crews arrived, leaving little opportunity to save the building.
Mr Marke reported that the sole occupant of the house was not present during the fire.
The blaze was brought under control within 30 minutes but by then the house had already been destroyed.
