VETERAN Tim Hubbard of Selby has defended his men’s singles title at the Belgrave Tennis Club Championships.
Using an impressive range of tactics acquired during a lifetime’s on-court experience, he outplayed popular Tecoma junior Steve Cornell for the second year in a row, taking out the championship 2 sets to 1.
Despite each having played in five elimination rounds earlier that day, Sunday 9 December, both players then elected to face one another across the net yet again, in the unisex doubles championship final.
The doubles – decided in one set with heavy rain threatening – was a family affair. Tim Hubbard paired with his 13-year-old son, Matthew, while Steve Cornell’s partner was his mother, Michelle.
Once again the Hubbard touch proved a winner, although the Cornell duo put up an impressive fight, eventually going down 4-6.
For the second year in a row, insufficient entries caused cancellation of the women’s championship.
