Sparkling Levell ton spurs Magpies to victory

By Iain Harley
JOHNATHON Levell came back from the break in sparkling touch providing the backbone for Belgrave’s 286 against Johnson Park in the Ferntree Gully and District Cricket Association’s Round 8.
Levell (149) has been working in Perth over the last few weeks and making the trip back each Friday to take part in Saturday cricket before retuning on Sunday afternoon.
Teammates Newey (38) and Fernando (38) made the only other contribution of note for the Magpies. The Sharks were well served by David Devenish taking 3/40.
With danger man Duleep Samaraweera out injured, The Sharks will be looking for the return of Bryn Gaunt from the Australian Country Championships.
Upwey compiled 352 against Upper Ferntree Gully at The Dome.
The Tigers batting was shared across the board with ex-Dandenong player Michael Hewitt top-scoring with 86, whilst Heath, Howe, Cross and Wilson also kept the scoreboard ticking over.
King’s captain Alistair Lord was the best bowler taking 4 for 49.
At Seebeck Oval, Tate Bergman helped Rowville to 258 at the close of play against St John’s Tecoma.
The Hawks were 5/90 but Bergman played some very solid cricket to ensure they batted out their 80 overs with the loss of only one more wicket.
Trent Pitts was the best bowler for the Saint’s but new recruit AFL player Luke Hodge attracted some attention bowling fairly sharply.
Ferntree Gully has 233 on the board against Eildon Park.
The Blues saw the return to form of skipper Matt Black (45) as well as the return from injury of Graham Salan (35). Spinner Andrew Field was also amongst the runs.
Eildon Park’s in form batsmen could make short work of this target but Ferntree Gully’s bowlers have managed to shut down run scoring opportunities before.
Monbulk look to have the game in hand against The Basin with the Huntsmen dismissed for 155. In reply Monbulk are 1/30.
Mountain Gate knocked up 242 against Knoxfield at HV Jones Reserve.
In the Decoite Shield, Footballers have already taken points off Knox Gardens and will be eyeing another outright opportunity.
Auravale look to be on their way to a win over Johnson Park and The Basin have set Lysterfield 247 for victory.
Scott McKenzie’s 6/35 has Knoxfield in the box seat against South Belgrave. Ferntree Gully and Knox are chasing modest totals against Eildon Park and Upwey respectively.
Ex-Johnson Park player Steve Seymour made 110 opening for Prahran against a strong Richmond attack, including state player Alan Wise.
Seymour gave a caught and bowled chance on 96 before making his century.
