Volleyball stars lauded

SPORTS Minister and Monbulk MP James Merlino recently got the chance to see some of the hills rising volleyball players in action.
He congratulated Monbulk College and Upwey High School students for their tremendous efforts at last month’s Australian Volleyball Schools Cup.
Upwey finished sixth out of 109 schools from across the country with 504 points, while not far behind Monbulk finished seventh with a score of 499.
Mr Merlino, who watched both schools compete at the State Volleyball Centre in Dandenong, said all teams had done his electorate proud.
“It was particularly exciting watching these talented students compete in the tournament,” he said.
“They did a wonderful job representing their schools and their communities.”
Mr Merlino said with a number of medals being awarded between the schools, it was not surprising that the two schools were ranked sixth and seventh in the country.
“This is a terrific achievement and all students who participated should be proud of their efforts,” he said.
Monbulk took home a pool of medals from the championships including two gold medals for the Under 16 boys and Under 15 girls Division One teams.
The school also took out three bronze medals for the Under 16 Division One boys, Under 14 boys Division One and Two.
Meanwhile, Upwey took home a gold medal for the Under 14 boys Division One, two silver for the Under 17 girls, and Under 14 girls and a bronze fro the Under 16 girls.
Matt Taylor and Michelle Galloway of Monbulk and Georgia Sverns of Upwey also took home Most Valuable Player awards.
