THE Shire of Yarra Ranges has stepped up its commitment to tackle climate change by adopting a strategy for the reduction of its greenhouse gas emissions.
The strategy calls for the council to change the type of light globes used in street lighting.
According to the council this would reduce energy consumption in street lighting by more than 66 per cent and would mean an annual saving of 2807 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.
Mayor Tim Heenan said the strategy had been designed to provide the council with a way to achieve its goals of becoming a carbon neutral council.
“This follows the shire’s resolution in March last year to become a carbon neutral organisation in 2008, to step up our efforts across the organisation to protect and enhance the natural environment – locally to globally,” he said.
As part of the council’s commitment to climate change it aims to continue lobbying the Municipal Association of Victoria for changes to public street lighting to reduce energy consumption.
The council also plans to conduct detailed audits of all its facilities and hold a sustainable living expo at Lillydale Lake this year.
