LANDHOLDERS are being urged to control weeds on their properties or face prosecution.
Department of Primary Industries (DPI) catchment management officer Gerry O’Keefe said people needed to take control of their weeds now before they get out of hand.
“Weed control is the responsibility of all landholders and strong action will be taken where this is responsibility is ignored,” he said.
“The priority weeds in this region (Port Phillip) are ragwort, gorse, blackberry and St Peter’s Wort.”
Mr O’Keefe said the DPI was keen to offer technical advice and assistance to help landowners control these and other weeds.
He has warned landowners that they can face fines of up to $3000 for failing control weeds on their properties.
People wanting to find out more about weed control can contact the DPI customer service centre on 13 61 86.
