Burn baby burn

By JODIE SYMONDS AND MELISSA MEEHAN

LILYDALE children have been left without a playground after equipment in Melba Park burnt down overnight, and police are investigating the incident.
Emergency services responded to a call at 5.40am today (Thursday 6 November) to find the playground alight, and CFA crews were able to put out the blaze.
The fire caused thousands of dollars’ worth of damage, but Lilydale CIU Detective Leading Senior Constable Brigitte de Chirico told the Mail that the playground would be able to be fixed.
Police had already responded to an attempted fire at Melba Park playground in the early hours of Monday morning.
“There have been a number (of attempts) since early October,” Det LSC de Chirico said.
“These fires have been overnight usually, or in the early hours of the morning.”
Police are calling for witnesses, and anyone with information is asked to contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
