ALONG with Theatre 1812, the ‘Mail’ is offering the chance to win a double-pass to the local theatre company’s latest offering, ‘Patient 12’.
The new play will run from 1 to 24 October in the Upper Ferntree Gully company’s second performing space, the bakery@1812.
This boutique theatre is built in the physical shell of an old bakery building, directly adjoining the main theatre, and is now integrated into the theatre complex.
The theatre company often performs its more contemporary plays in this space.
In this era piece, based in the year 1919 in a military hospital in Melbourne, the story focuses on a soldier returned from the battlefields of Europe.
Against all odds, and in defiance of his injuries, he is still alive, although unidentifiable and with no hope of recovery.
Known only as Patient 12, and with no known family, mystery surrounds this man.
However, circumstantial factors enable a shortlist of possible identities to be compiled and their families contacted.
Patient 12’s identity is known to each visitor, but by a different name.
Depending on their individual need, he becomes who they need him to be; and their needs reflect their individual stories and the environment of post-war Australia in 1919.
