FOR most café owners, a car ploughing through their front window would spell disaster.
But the owners of Belgrave’s Queen of Tarts Café are choosing to see the freak event as an opportunity to make some improvements.
At about 7pm last Tuesday (22 July) a station wagon crashed through the store front in Belgrave’s main street.
Police said the car rolled off a tow truck as it drove up the steep Terrys Avenue.
The car rolled down the road, over the roundabout and into the café, missing traffic going around the roundabout and passing pedestrians.
Kristy Sampson and business partner Melissa Donovan have run the store for the past five years.
“We’re taking the opportunity to paint and make some changes,” Ms Sampson said.
“We’re looking forward to the revamp and to reopening for all our customers.”
Ms Sampson said the café had a large regular trade, and many loyal patrons had popped in to check on the damage.
“We’re missing them and we feel bad for them because most are addicted to their morning coffee,” she said.
Most of the damage was confined to the front windows and no one was injured.
Ms Sampson was unsure how long the café would remain closed.
Belgrave police are investigating the incident.
