Mum’s fury on hit, run

A COCKATOO mother is furious after a car driver ran her daughter off the road and into an embankment before fleeing the scene on Friday night.
Therese Griffith said her daughter Meagan, 20, was almost home when the incident took place at about 7.30pm.
Mrs Griffith said Meagan was travelling through the intersection of Neville and Stean streets when a vehicle came out of Stean pushing Meagan down an embankment.
Meagan said she saw the driver of the other vehicle coming towards her and, at the last minute swerved, running down an embankment.
Meagan said the driver did not stop to see if she was okay, but kept driving.
She said although shaken at the time she was able to get out of the car and climb up the embankment where she walked only four doors down to her home to get help.
“I wasn’t really hurt, I only had a concussion and a bump on the head, but I was really shaken up,” she said.
Mrs Griffith said the intersection was a real concern as motorists always came flying out of Stein Street without giving way.
“Meagan wasn’t really hurt, but she could have been seriously hurt.
“Someone will get badly hurt one day if something isn’t done about it,” she said.
Mrs Griffith said there was a need for a barrier where Meagan had her accident to stop similar incidents in the future.
“We had to call a tow truck to get Meagan’s car out, but it couldn’t move the car and we had to call in a bigger tow truck which cost us more than $1,200,” she said.
Meagan also said something needed to be done about the intersection as there were always cars speeding around the corner.
“They (the council) needs to put in a rail or something, even a give way or stop sign at the intersection would help make it safer,” she said.
Shire of Cardinia manager of governance and communication, Doug Evans, said the police would be investigating the incident and report to council.
Mr Evans said if police suggested something needed to be done about the intersection the council would look at it.
