EMERALD Golf Club staged its annual, foursomes championships in excellent conditions with only a slight splash of the wet stuff at intervals.
The greens are getting quicker each week in preparation for the Pro-am on 10 December so some people struggled to handle the tricky speed of putts and the inaccuracy of their playing partners.
In a day loaded with surprises, none was greater than Alan Diedrich’s ability to drag his partner, Dennis Fuller, across the line for a win in the open, stroke championship. They finished with 83 off the stick. Graeme Bates and Ken Hill chased them right home with 84 and but for little bad luck, could have taken out the contest.
In the handicap championship, Diedrich and Fuller again fell over the line with 68 from Bates and Hill on 68.5.
Other pairs to perform were Ross Martin and Graeme Lawler who finished with 91 / 71.5 and Ian Scott and Stuart Courtney with 93 / 71.5.
Other pairs to perform were McCoy and Miller, who came back to the field with a crash when they had 101/79.5 while Peter Clowes and Mike Litchfield managed 92/79.5.
Next week all golfers can relax with a stableford event and a chance to do something to their handicaps.
News comes through from the Pro-am sponsors that there is a motorised golf buggy from E-z-go golf carts as a prize for a hole in one on the 12th and Malaysian Airlines, the major sponsor, has put up a single, business class return ticket to Kuala Lumpur for a hole in one on the 13th.
Leaf Busters and Fuji Films have sponsored prizes for winner on the day.
The afternoon card is just about full but there are some spaces for budding champions for the morning round.
It would be appreciated if members could use plenty of sand in divots in fairways over the next couple of weeks. Fill your divot and any others you see. Please do the same for pitch-marks on the green.
