Learning the first steps

THE kindergarten program at Little Albert’s Childcare Centre is designed to meet each child’s developmental needs and is taught by Sarah Donald, a pre-school teacher qualified in early education.
Ms Donald said kindergarten is a child’s first formal step in the education process, therefore it is extremely important that this first step is as fulfilling and successful as possible.
“Children learn best by doing rather than being told what to do, so active learning is at the centre of the developmentally-based kinder program,” she said.
“The role of teachers is to assist children with their active learning across all areas of development by constantly encouraging children to become increasingly independent, to interact with others, to use initiative, to recognise and resolve their own conflicts, to be curious and be confident in what they do.”
Little Albert’s kinder room’s focus is on getting the children ready for school.
“School readiness is achieved in many different developmental areas not just the academic skills,” Ms Donald said.
“Children need to be independent, social, emotionally able to cope with different situations and develop problem-solving skills just as much as they need to learn how to hold a pencil correctly, write their name, count to 20 and cut with scissors.”
Interested parents can visit the centre at 166 Albert Avenue Boronia, make an inquiry on 9761 0022, 9761 2604 or online at www.littlealberts.com.au.
