HILLS wildlife carers could soon share in a $950,000 support package following the release of the 2009-10 State Budget.
The cash aims to help carers in the continued rehabilitation of wildlife.
Environment Minister Gavan Jennings said the funding was the extension of the State Government’s successful pilot program to help upgrade shelters.
He said under the program accredited volunteer shelters would be able to apply for cash grants up to $5000.
“Wildlife shelters have been placed under huge pressure as a result of Victoria’s devastating bushfires and this program will enable them to repair and expand their facilities as an important part of our recovery following the fires,” he said.
Kallista’s wildlife champion Carol Seeger was ecstatic when she heard the funding would be continued.
Ms Seeger is currently looking after a raft of kangaroos, wombats and some sugar gliders and desperately needs fox-proof fencing installed.
She missed out on the pilot funding cash and thought the program had ended.
“I was really disappointed but that’s great news that it’s going to continue,” Ms Seeger said.
“I never expected they (State Government) would give us any more.”
