Rhythm of Africa

By Tania Martin
SELBY Primary School students recently got a taste of African culture.
They were enthralled last month with a visit from the West African percussion dance troupe WALA.
The afternoon of entertainment included drumming, dancing, percussion and soaring vocal harmonies.
Students even got the chance to try their hands at the drums during the performance.
Teacher Jan Abbott said it was really important to incorporate different cultures into the mix of programs the schools offers the children. Extending their African experience, students had been drawing inspiration from safari animals during art lesions in the lead up to the performance.
