Monbulk Bowls midweek report

Monbulk 1 played Eastwood Golf in the final round of mid-week pennant before the Christmas break hopeful of winning in order to maintain their position in the top four.

Monbulk were four shots in front at the lunch bell, but faltered in the second half to go down by 17 shots, 51 to 68.

Peter Koomen’s rink had a close tussle early, but then opened up a lead of seven shots after twelve ends. They still led by five shots after sixteen ends, but dropped 13 shots in the last five ends to go down by eight shots, 17 to 25.

Eric Markham’s rink did not score in the first four ends and found themselves eight shots down. They got within three shots after nine ends, but then fell away conceding a number of multiples to lose by nine shots, 13 to 22.

Jim Bras’ rink took control on the thirteenth end when they picked up five shots to lead by seven. They then dropped a five, three ends later to let their opponents back in the game.

The Monbulk rink were one shot in front going into the last end and were holding two close shots when a double wick from the Eastwood skip rolled in to give them the shot and a tie, 21 shots all. This means that Monbulk 1 has now dropped out of the top four.

Monbulk 2 played Cranbourne RSL at home in what was a close contest on two of the three rinks. Graeme Seymour’s rink trailed by 10 shots after 12 ends. They then picked up six shots on the thirteenth end and when they won the next two ends they were only two shots down.

They lost the next three ends to be five shots down with three ends to play. They then stormed home to level the scores on the final end for a tie, 16 shots all.

Graeme Goller’s rink was seven shots down after nine ends. They then won six of the next eight ends to be within one shot.

When they picked up four shots on the twentieth end they found themselves one shot in front with one end to play.

However, they dropped two shots on the last end to lose by one shot, 17 to 18. Eric Furby’s rink led by six shots after 10 ends. They then lost the next seven ends to trail by nine shots and eventually lost by seven shots, 15 to 22. Monbulk lost the overall by eight shots 48 to 56.

Monbulk 3 played Yarra Glen at home and there were significant differences in scores across two of the rinks.

Peter Lee’s rink dominated the game and were 17 shots in front after six ends. They continued to win the majority of ends and won by 28 shots, 36 to eight.

Bruce Cockerill’s rink was level after seven ends. They then won only three more ends to go down by 18 shots, 11 to 29.

Mike Harris’ rink had the close one with scores level on the seventh, ninth and thirteenth ends. The Monbulk rink then gained the upper hand and led by three shots with two ends to play.

However, they dropped five shots on the second last end, but recovered to force a tie, 15 shots all. Monbulk won the overall by 10 shots, 62 to 52.
