Top Spot Set For Monbulk

Tuesday pennant saw top side Monbulk play second-placed Heathmont at home.

Eric Markham’s rink started well and after seven ends led by 7 shots. They then dropped four shots on the next end, but were able to get these back and still had a 7 shot lead after fourteen ends. The Monbulk rink won 5 of the last 7 ends to win by 10 shots, 21 to 11.

Peter Koomen’s rink trailed up until the ninth end when they picked up 4 shots and at the completion of the eleventh end led by 6 shots. They then dropped 8 shots in 3 ends and after 14 ends were 2 shots behind. The Monbulk rink levelled the scores on the fifteenth end, but lost 3 of the last 4 ends to lose by 3 shots, 16 to 19.

Jim Bras’ rink began well and by the fourth end led by 9 shots. Their opponents won 6 of the next 9 ends and led by 2 shots. The Monbulk rink picked up 7 shots in two ends to lead by 5 shots and when they picked up 7 shots on the seventeenth end the lead had blown out to 8 shots which was the final margin, 30 to 22.

Monbulk won the overall by 15 shots, 67 to 52 and have sewn up top spot for the finals which begin in two weeks.

Monbulk 2 travelled to Cranbourne and had trouble on most rinks coping with the slow grass green.

Alan Hamilton’s rink was only able to win two ends losing by 34 shots, 2 to 36. Eric Furby’s rink was only two shots down after 8 ends, but then won only 2 of the last thirteen ends to lose by 23 shots, 9 to 32.

Graeme Goller’s rink was the shining light and after 9 ends led by 13 shots. The opposition then grabbed the momentum winning the majority of ends and moved within 4 shots with two ends to play. The Monbulk rink held its nerve to eventually win by three shots, 21 to 18.

Monbulk 2 lost the overall by 54 shots, 32 to 86.

Monbulk 3 played Eastwood Golf and it was a close contest on 2 of the rinks. Mike Harris’ rink were 3 shots in front after 8 ends, but then dropped 4 shots on the tenth end to trail by 2 shots. By the seventeenth end scores were level and the Monbulk rink finished strongly winning 3 of the last 4 ends to win by one shot, 17 to 16.

Alan Brooke’s rink trailed by 4 shots after 12 ends, but by the second last end had tied the scores. The Eastwood rink grabbed the shot on the last end to win 14 to 13.

Bruce Cockerill’s rink trailed by 12 shots after eight ends and they battled hard, but went down by 15 shots, 10 to 25.

Monbulk lost the overall by 15 shots, 40 to 55.
