The 2022 Kalorama Rally will highlight Australia-made, homemade race-cars alongside a collection of vintage, post-vintage and post-war vehicles.

On 20 March, classic cars from all over Victoria will descend on Kalorama Memorial Reserve to raise funds for the local CFA brigade.

Organiser Paul Edgar said the first Kalorama Rally was held in 1956, coinciding with a floral display.

“The organizers said how can we create a little bit more interest than just a floral display?” Mr Edgar said.

“Sports Car Club of Victoria was invited to display some vintage cars and it subsequently became a vintage car rally.”

Vintage cars are vehicles built between 1919 and 1929, post-vintage are between 1929 and 1939, and post-war cars are any vehicle built after the Second World War.

Mr Edgar said people should expect an eclectic range of veteran, vintage and post vintage cars and motorbikes.

“It’s not only in the hills, its Victoria wide. We have cars coming from all over the state attending. Some of them are brought on trailers and some of them are driven,” he said.

“Most of the people who display their cars are not from the Dandenongs.”

The Kalorama Rally opens at 10am, with entry costing $10 for adults and children under 16 enter free.

Mr Edgar said this year the rally will showcase “Australian specials.”

“They’re cars that are very often been cobbled together by lots of bits and pieces of different cars or a car that’s worn out and the body couldn’t be rebuilt, so maybe a racing car has been made out of a saloon car,” he said.

“Australia is so far removed from Europe didn’t have high fidelity racing cars in the 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s, so we made them ourselves,

“There will be another home build car which has a Ford V8 motor in it worth an absolute fortune, which belongs to a supreme court judge.”

Kalorama Memorial Reserve is located on Mt Dandenong Tourist Road, Kalorama.
