Eco-thoughts for earthlings- Henk van Leeuwen discusses the philosophy behind environmental th

EMERALD resident and environmentalist Henk van Leeuwen can now add author to his list of achievements.
His new book was written on the completion of his PhD, which is based on environmental philosophy.
Mr van Leeuwen said he has tried to make the book easy to understand although it is still an academic read.
“I’m looking at how we fit in to nature, and how we can use resources in a more sustainable way so we can avoid problems like climate change,” he said.
“Another way of seeing it is environmental thinking for earthlings.”
Mr van Leeuwen said the idea of the title – Only a God Can Save Us, a quote by German philosopher Martin Heidegger – came from the idea that it takes more than just water tanks or eco-bulbs to make a difference.
“You need a complete change in attitude. We need the will to change the way we live, by wanting to live more in tune with nature,” he said.
“There is a lot of talk about sustainability and climate change, but not much happening.”
Mr van Leeuwen developed a great love for the Australian environment when he arrived from The Netherlands 50 years ago.
“I spent the first few years on a push bike exploring the great country we have here,” he said.
Mr van Leeuwen will launch his book at Burrinja Café and Cultural Centre in Upwey, on Sunday 15 May from 3 to 5pm.
