A FERNY Creek volunteer committee has called for the State Government to dig deep to help maintain the town’s reserve.
Members recently (28 May) met with Eastern Metropolitan Region MP Edward O’Donohue to voice their concerns.
According to the committee, the reserve is under the jurisdiction of the Department of Sustainability and needs urgent maintenance.
Committee member Sarah Krumins said major work was needed on the reserve’s mains water infrastructure.
She said it has been needed since at least 2000. The committee is also calling for help to renovate the kitchen in the hall, as well as work on the water mains.
“The water mains from the street down to the hall, to the tennis courts, cottage and log cabin all need replacing,” Ms Krumins said.
She said the log cabin which was the town’s original kinder back in the 1920s was in desperate need of stumping. “It’s starting to sink,” Ms Krumins said.
Ms Krumins said the car park also needed fixing.
The volunteer committee only raises cash for the bare essential maintenance through the hire of the hall, which desperately needed an overhaul.
Ms Krumins said it would cost more than $170,000 to fix everything that needed attention.
“It’s not always been to that extent but now it has got to the stage that there is no way in hell we could raise the money needed to do the repairs,” she said.
“It has got way out of hand.”
Mr O’Donohue spoke about the need for cash to fix up the reserve in State Parliament last month. He said given the money the volunteers saved the government, the request was a reasonable one.
The Mail was unable to get a response from the DSE before going to print.
