FERNTREE Gully teen Che Steer’s dreams of singing in London are now closer than ever.
The 18-year-old soul singer is “still buzzing” after last month sharing the stage with 25 of Victoria’s top young performers in the Top Acts concert.
The showcase featured the best of last year’s VCE singers, dancers, musicians and actors.
Che wowed examiners at his year 12 music solo performance final assessment and was selected to sing two tunes in the Top Class music recital in March.
His outstanding renditions of Georgia on My Mind and My Funny Valentine saw him plucked from more than 150 students to sing in Top Acts where he was one of only two solo singers to take the stage.
Che was nervous and excited before performing the Richard Rogers and Lorenz Hart jazz classic My Funny Valentine before the Hamer Hall crowd on 28 May.
“It was amazing. I’m still buzzing,” he said.
“It just all came together on the night.”
Che learnt plenty from his fellow performers.
“They were all just so nice. It was good to make new friends,” he said.
He now plans to audition for London music colleges at the end of the year.
His Belgrave singing teacher Helen Jackson said Che’s selection for Top Class was “big in itself”.
“We are very honoured and excited that Che has been chosen from all of the performers in Top Class, as the standard was so incredibly high,” she said.
“Being chosen was almost like winning a Tattslotto ticket, the chances are so low.”
Top Acts was the final event of the VCE Season of Excellence which runs from March to July each year.
It showcases exemplary work by visual, technology and performing arts students.
