LUCKY residents received free trees and shrubs at the City of Casey’s annual plant giveaway last month.
City of Casey mayor Shar Balmes said it was fantastic to see people receiving a plant which suited their needs and would grow to become a part of their garden.
“A blend of hardy Australian natives and local indigenous plants were offered to residents, providing them with a choice according to their neighbourhood character, soil type, block size and individual preferences,” Cr Balmes said.
The council-funded plant give-away, which is now its 10th year, forms part of the community-based Growing a Green Web program which aims to revegetate open spaces in the City of Casey through volunteer involvement.
Through the program, an additional 20,000 native plants are planted each year on public land in Casey with the assistance of schools, friends groups, committees of management, service clubs and community agencies.
