Crowds enjoy day in the sun

IT was a day of fun – and fundraising – at the Pakenham racecourse on Sunday.
A big crowd of sunseekers were at the track for an eight-event race meeting. And it was the annual race day for members of the Cardinia Beaconhills Golf Club – who enjoyed a two-course lunch and drinks in the committee room.
Other racegoers opted for the sun – and the atmosphere that only a day at the country races throws up.
And though he was elsewhere in the world – probably counting his oil barrels and money – Sheikh Mohammed owned a winner.
Trained at thoroughbred headquarters, Flemington, Democrat was too good in the Cardinia Shire Council Handicap. (Who said local government lacked democracy?)
Five-year-old mare Deliver The Gold lived up to her name in winning and it was a downright good day for the connections of the horse called Downright, winner of the sixth.
Pakenham hosted another big meeting on Tuesday, a late switch of venue from Moe.
