Shire joins state sustainability group

THE Shire of Yarra Ranges last week agreed to join the Victorian Local Sustainability Accord (VLSA) which is a partnership between the State Government and local governments.
The partnership aims to coordinate efforts between State and local governments in identifying and addressing environmental problems across the state such as weed and stormwater management.
Billanook Ward councillor Tim Heenan has been chosen by the council to represent the shire on the VLSA advisory committee.
This comes after the council received a letter from Minister for Environment John Thwaites who sent letters to municipalities across the state requesting participation in the accord.
Former Melba Ward councillor Di Moore, who attended last week’s council meeting, said she was pleased to see that the council was taking a positive step forward for the sustainability of the shire in joining the accord.
Mrs Moore said there was many aspects of environmental sustainability that needed addressing in the shire, but that this move to join the VLSA was a step in the right direction.
