SELBY Precinct Safety Group has taken a further step towards safety, but is calling on community support for its latest venture.
Following the advice of Monbulk MP James Merlino at a meeting in September 2005, the group is ready to deliver its Community Road Safety Survey to approximately 500 homes over the school holidays.
Group spokeswoman Julie Howard said the purpose of the survey was to find out how the community viewed the extent of traffic and pedestrian danger in the precinct.
The precinct, identified as the shopping and trading centre on the Belgrave-Gembrook Road, has long been the source of safety concerns for motorists and pedestrians, including schoolchildren walking to and from the shops.
The survey also aims to discover what safety improvements the community believes are necessary to improve safety.
The survey has been endorsed by all local businesses, community groups using Charles Street, local residents, Selby CFA and All Saints Church Selby, as well as Selby Primary School and Selby Pre-School.
“We would like to make sure everyone fills (the survey) in and sends it back, because it all relates to safety at Selby shopping precinct,” Ms Howard said.
The stretch has a speed limit of 60km/h, and a pair of mirrors opposite the Charles Street intersection, identified by Ms Howard as a particular area of danger, is the only other concession to safety.
“We have the mirrors, but if they’re fogged up or the sun’s on them, then you’re virtually going out on two blind bends.
“We also have the problem of cars, buses and trucks parking on the main street in front of the milk bar,” she said.
The group had initially wanted a roundabout, but cost may rule out the option.
Alternatives to a roundabout would include the installation of a zebra crossing or traffic lights, or a reduction in the speed limit.
The group aims to meet with Mr Merlino and Shire of Yarra Ranges representatives when survey data have been assessed.
Copies of the survey will be delivered to homes with a reply-paid envelope for the Selby Family Clinic. Alternatively, they can be dropped in at the Selby General Store, or the Selby Community House, outside school holiday times by 30 April. Inquiries to Ms Howard on 0425 776 115.
