MOUNT Evelyn will soon be home to a decommissioned cannon used during the Vietnam War and the RSL is asking the public where it should go.
The RSL’s application for the M2A2 howitzer was recently approved by the Australian Government after it was submitted five years ago.
President Roger Boness, who served in the Royal Australian Artillery as a forward observer during the Vietnam War, said cannons similar to the howitzer were used extensively during that time.
“It’s a very versatile gun – it can shoot at more than 45 degrees and uses 105mm shells.”
RSL secretary Anthony McAleer said the cannon will be used to commemorate those who served their country and as a focus for Anzac celebrations.
He said he hoped the public wouldn’t see it in a negative light.
“We have lots of local Vietnam veterans around and Mount Evelyn also lost three veterans during the war, so we think it is quite significant and appropriate,” he said.
“It’ll be used as a tribute to those veterans.”
Mr Boness emphasised that the RSL has a strong focus on the community and its needs.
“We want the public to know that what we do is for the community,” he said.
“We have a range of projects lined up for the near future and we want to bring the community along with us.”
The RSL is considering placing the cannon either in the war memorial gardens or in front of the RSL building and is asking for public input on the choice of location.
“Some think it should be in the front of the RSL to protect it a bit from vandalism and to signify it is from the RSL, but others find it should be next to the war memorial, as many community groups around Australia have cannons displayed next to their war memorials,” Mr McAleer said.
“Either way, it would be great to get some feedback from the community.”
