QUIRKY Werx is the perfect name for the eclectic range of antiques and collectables, furniture and giftware at this delightful shop in Olinda.
Owners Karen and Doug Ward have always enjoyed items from a bygone era and this love of old things evolved into a hobby when they started buying and selling items.
“The hobby grew so quickly that we started the store in August last year and we haven’t looked back,” he said.
“As we tell everyone, it is always better to buy an old piece of furniture for your home.
“You know it will survive the test of time and will only need replacing when your style changes. Better still, it will keep its value and, if you buy wisely, its value will only improve — making for a great investment.”
The current range includes treadle sewing machines, washstands, sideboards, tables, chairs, depression glass (see the amazing uranium glass display), assorted kitchenalia and vintage china, including everyone’s favourites, Carlton Ware and Royal Winton.
“Due to popular demand, we have just commenced a shabby but chic corner, perfect for the girl in all of us,” said Karen.
“We have also been very fortunate in some of our expeditions lately so have a number of wonderful and rare treats. For example, a 1930s Golden Fleece petrol bowser, Cyclops pedal car with crane, candlestick telephone, original 1930s enamel canisters, Columbia Graphaphone, an antique wax doll and a large Australian Verna teddy bear.
“Our latest giftware lines include beautiful new blue and white china, cast-iron money boxes, reproduction gramophones, banquet lamps, genuine Burleigh Ware and Cornish Blue china, kitchen witches (for good luck) and assorted tin planes, cars and fire trucks.”
New stock arrives every week. “Even if you don’t find something you like, it is a great walk down memory lane, not to mention a great way to spend the afternoon,” Karen said.
Quirky Werx, at Shop 5, 47 Olinda Monbulk Road, Olinda, is conveniently located at the car park at rear of Pie in The Sky.
