SHERBROOKE Rangers Under 11 Dragons remain undefeated on top of the ladder after an impressive 3-0 victory over Ashburton.
The Dragons, led by captain Josh Dowsett looked dangerous in the first half but it was not until the 13 minute mark when Nathan Stephens found the back of the net with a brilliant left foot strike.
Seconds later, Ahren Angulo combined with his brothers Jason and Kane to send the Dragons into halftime with a 2-0 lead. The second half was a tight battle.
Ashburton tried valiantly to attack but Sherbrooke’s defence, led by Scott Turley, Chris Howard and Alex Orpin, had all the answers.
The Dragons put the game beyond doubt when Dane Ebert goaled and celebrated with a stunning acrobatic routine which thrilled the crowd.
In a dramatic turnaround to their 8-0 drubbing last week the Under 16 Tiagos gave a worthy performance in their 1-0 defeat to Manningham.
The first half stand out players were keeper Oscar Hayes who made some crucial saves and defender Alex Bezanovic whose strong tackling was a highlight.
After conceding a goal early in the second half the Tiagos stepped up their attack on the ball. Strikers Josh Butler and Ben Vander Hulst made some searching runs through the middle, only to have their shots denied by the Manningham keeper.
In a man of the match performance, Dan Cox strived hard all day both in attack and defence.
Elsewhere the U12 Sharks continued their winning streak cruising to an easy 8-0 victory against Eltham.
The Mens Arrows performed far better this week holding a strong Mooroolbark combination to just one goal until the last 20 minutes of the match where fitness told on the toiling defence.
The Sherbrooke Ladies lost to Yarra Valley 3-2 with Jess O’Brien scoring the teams first two goals for the season.
The Under 10 Pumas fought valiantly to hold on for a draw away at North Blackburn. This game featured outstanding work by sweeper Adam Doolan as well as a strong performance in goal by Fletcher Field.
The shock result of the weekend was the Men’s Forest team 3-0 loss to Berwick. For several years’ division champions, this was their worst league defeat ever and first for the 2006 season.
