THE Belgrave community is to be given a chance to name the township’s newest landmark and win a shopping spree in the process.
The Belgrave Traders Association (BTA), in conjunction with the Belgrave Region Action Group (BRAG), was last week given the green light by the Shire of Yarra Ranges to kick off a competition to name the park hitherto known simply as Belgrave Town Park.
A judging panel expected to comprise members of BTA, BRAG, the council, Dandenong Ranges Tourism and local historical societies will choose the best name from all entries received before the closing date on Friday, 14 July.
The prize will be $100 worth of Belgrave shopping dollars, as well as a place in the township’s history books.
Sitting over the town above the corner of Monbulk Road and Terrys Avenue, the park was completed in 2005 at a total cost of $521,487.
According to BTA president Andrew Rayment, a number of possibe names for the park came up during the consultation period, but no formal submission process took place.
Mr Rayment said residents were welcome to restate their original suggestions or enter new ideas.
“When we’ve run competitions in the past, there’s been a good response,” Mr Rayment said, referring to the naming of the James Car Park and Blacksmiths Way.
“It shows local people are interested in the town and what goes on and we’d like to have their input,” he said.
Entries can be sent by post to Belgrave Traders Association, PO Box 666, Belgrave, 3160 or emailed to beltraders@westnet.com.au. The closing date is Friday, 14 July.
