KNOX City Council agreed to set its councillor and mayoral allowances beneath the maximum permitted, opting instead to an increase on the previous year’s amounts in line with the consumer price index (CPI).
The vote means councillors will receive a pro rata allowance of $16,431 from Saturday, 1 July to Thursday, 30 November, with the sum for the year commencing 1 December set at $16,431 plus CPI.The allowance will then undergo an increase by CPI on 1 December, 2007 and 1 December 2008.
The mayoral allowance will begin at $46,004 from Saturday, 1 July and will be adjusted correspondingly.
The allowances fall below the maximum levels of $18,000 and $57,500 respectively, and the increase on the previous year is consistent with the council’s aim to limit average rate rises to CPI.
