Solutions in a changing climate
At the Community Solutions in a Changing Climate event at Burrinja on Friday 9 August from 7pm, speakers will be discussing what a changing climate means for the local community and practical responses that communities can take to become more resilient in a changing climate. Environment psychologist Dr Susie Burke will explore means of coping with climate change and practical strategies to engage responsively. Associate Professor Lauren Rickards, expert in community climate change adaptation, will discuss the risks that communities face in a changing climate and how local communities can strengthen and become more resilient.
Knox TRIP
The combined Knox emergency services – CFA, SES, police and ambulance – will present a hard-hitting roads program at Wantirna City Life Church on Wednesday 7 August. Drivers aged 18 to 25 are over-represented in serious injury and collisions where lives are lost on the road. The Knox Teenage Road Information Program (TRIP) is designed to address the identified risks of alcohol, drugs, speed, inexperience, distraction and peer group pressure, and provide information and examples of how to change behaviour. Emergency services personnel who have witnessed the devastation caused first hand deliver the program. As a united team, the emergency services of Knox aim to educate and encourage young drivers to make safer decisions on the road. Child-friendly celebration around death
Children of all ages are invited to an afternoon of age-appropriate fun, interactive art and craft experiences, storytelling and facepainting as part of the Yarra Ranges Dying to Know Expo. Attendees can come dressed in their favourite Halloween or Day of the Dead costume and bring a plate of the most ghoulish and garish grub they can think of to share for the Frightening Feast. Kids can stay on for a 6pm movie screening of the Disney/Pixar film Coco while end of life educator Christina Reeves ‘Deathweaver’ chats with parents about how to talk with children about death. Tecoma Uniting Church is hosting the event from 4pm to 8pm on Friday 10 August. Entry is $5 per person or $10 per family.
Yarra Ranges Dying to Know Expo
The Yarra Ranges Dying to Knox Expo is a friendly, inclusive day of exploring topics around death, dying and bereavement. There is a full program of interactive, creative, artistic and informative opportunities for attendees to explore and experience, including talks, workshops, live music and face painting. Tecoma Uniting Church will host the event from 10am to 5pm on Sunday 11 August.
Cheese tasting
The 1st Kallista Scouts Group is holding a cheese tasting event from 7.30pm on Saturday 17 August. Tricia Cullen from the Deli Platter will guide attendees through a tasting plate of world-class cheeses and they can enjoy a complimentary glad of bubbles on arrival. Additional beverages will be available for purchase on the night. All proceeds will go to the 1st Kallista Scout Group, who provide an extensive adventure program for five to 18-year-olds. U3A Upwey garden group
Amy Wang will talk about making eco-enzyme spray out of food waste, for use in house cleaning and gardening at the Upwey Senior’s Community Centre, 6 Mahony Street, on 14 August at 7.30pm. Supper will be provided. Inquiries: Barb 9754 3877.
Friends Volunteer program
