YARRA Ranges residents are warned to take electrical safety seriously when putting up Christmas lights.
SP AusNet, electricity distributor for the Yarra Ranges advises that the following checklist will help avoid dangerous problems from faulty or incorrectly assembled animated displays and equipment.
To decorate a home be aware of the following:
•Check every light strand for broken sockets, loose connections, frayed wires or blown bulbs;
•Check the package to ensure lights are approved for Australian use;
•Keep outdoor lighting connections above ground;
•Ensure outdoor lights are marked as waterproof;
•Do not use electric lights on a metallic tree;
•Do not overload power points;
•Power poles must not be used for decorations.
