A MONTROSE environmental group is calling for the Shire of Yarra Ranges to put a stop to the expansion of the town’s quarry.
Montrose Environmental Group president Kim Wormald said local residents were furious about the latest proposal to expand the quarry.
Ms Wormald met with the council recently and called for the application to be refused.
But mayor Tim Heenan said no decisions would be made until the council has met with all parties.
He said the council would be meeting with Boral later this week to discuss the proposal and to discuss its environmental effects statement (EES), which was released in June.
The EES outlined that the quarry currently operates with little or no detrimental impact on the environment.
But Ms Wormald said the ESS had confirmed residents’ worst fears that if the quarry were expanded it would have a massive impact on the local environment.
Ms Wormald is calling on the council to refuse the expansion before it even goes to public consultation.
She is also urging local residents to write to councillors and local MPs to implore them to protect Montrose against the quarry expansion. Cr Heenan said the council would be making a decision in the next couple of weeks whether the expansion proposal will be exhibited for public comment.
