Historic shine

A RAY of light will soon shine across the George Tindale Memorial Garden in Sherbrooke.
Six heritage light poles that once lined St Kilda Road in the 1930s are being restored to their original condition.
George Tindale brought the lights in the early 1960s to give his garden a bit of extra light.
But the lights had grown rusty, tired and needed a new coat of paint.
The Friends of the George Tindale Memorial Garden joined forces with Parks Victoria to give the lights a much needed new lease on life. The project was funded through Parks Victoria’s community grants program and has cost almost $5000.
The friends group has been working on the project for the past 12 months.
Parks Victoria garden coordinator Mark Krause said the restoration has involved repainting the light columns and shroud frames to the original colour and the installation of energy saving light fittings.
“This project will preserve part of Melbourne’s history while enhancing the cultural values and presentation of the gardens,” he said.
