AS SUMMER approaches and the threat of bush fires draw closer residents in the Dandenong Ranges need to start thinking about developing their bushfire survival plans.
The Country Fire Authority has urged residents to develop a plan that includes a set of actions to address the risks in the event of a bush fire.
The plan will require residents to make a series of decisions about what to do on high risk fire days, or if a fire is threatening their home. People should develop a plan even if their decision is to leave the area before fire threatens as they would still need a well thought out plan.
The plan should include three vital points including whether the resident plans to stay and actively defend their home or leave early.
If the decision is to leave early the plan needs to identify where the residents will go, when they will leave, how they will get there, what they plan to take with them, what to do with any pets, and a contact person who has been advised of the plan.
Those planning to stay to defend their homes will need to look at a number of important issues including who will look after their pets, what to do if an elderly relative or children are at the house, and how to protect the property. A well thought out bush fire plan should address all these issues. The CFA also advises that everyone living in the household should have a plan and know what their roles are in the event of a fire.
