ROCK band Slayain proved to be too strong for hills musicians as they went head-to-head for the Cardinia Shire battle of the bands.
The Frankston based rockers eliminated its competition to take home the Battle of the Bands title, which was held in Pakenham on Friday, 29 June.
A huge line-up of local talent vied for the ultimate prize of spending time in a recording studio but it was Slayain who took the honours.
A 290-strong crowd cheered as up and coming bands such as Slayain, Decomvulsion, Sunsets in Suburbia, Decembers Fallen, Shy Robyn, The Posers and Me, You and the Other Two.
The seven bands competed for prizes as well as the chance to compete in regional finals.
But it was Slayain that won the ultimate prize with Decomvulsion coming in a close second.
Slayain lead guitarist Matt Houston said the band was thrilled to participate in the competition and hadn’t expected to win.
“Winning was a bonus. For us it’s about the music and the crowd,” he said.
“We go on stage wanting to deliver the best possible show we can.”
Houston said the crowd was fantastic and that they were a great support on the night.
Hills musician and Battle of the Bands judge Brent Hall said it was fantastic to see so many young people enjoying the event and supporting their favourite band.
Mr Hall said it was hard to separate the bands because they were very talented but in the end Slayain proved to be the top act of the night.
“It was a difficult choice to make as we were impressed by all of the bands and the wealth of talent on the night,” he said.
Houston said the band was now looking forward to using its first prize of recording time at Mountain Top Studios.
Slayain will now perform at the regional finals later this year.
