Rescue relief

The Dandenong Ranges is made up of a myriad of small communities similar to that of Beaconsfield, Tasmania, scene of last week’s mine rescue. Local hearts went out to the miners during the long and daring rescue. Here is what a cross-section of local residents had to say about the drama.

“I think the rescuers have got to be praised just as much. It’s just fantastic they’re out, but there were more than two people involved. It was a team effort by everybody.”
Berry McDade, of Vermont, with grandson, Matthew.
“I’m very relieved that they’re out. It must have been so tough on them and their families. Also, one person died down there – we’re not forgetting him.”

“I’m just happy about it. There are no other words to say, really – just HAPPY in capital letters.”
Lorna Chapman, of Silvan.

“I wish them all the best, and especially their families. They went through a lot.”
