Garden pick-up gets green light

SHIRE of Yarra Ranges residents can soon kick unwanted green waste to the curb.
The Shire of Yarra Ranges will introduce an optional fortnightly curbside green waste collection for people living in urban areas and townships in the Dandenong Ranges.
People will have the option of using a 120-litre or 240-litre bin for their loose green waste including weeds.
Mayor Monika Keane said green waste bins will offer people a convenient and affordable fortnightly collection service.
“This new service means residents will no longer need to wait for a bundled green waste collection to dispose of leaves and weeds,” she said.
“Residents will be able to put green waste in their bin whenever they choose to garden and simply put the bin out on the nominated collection day.”
Lyster Ward councillor Samantha Dunn said it is fantastic to finally see the introduction of the green waste bin collection service.
Cr Dunn said since joining council last year, the issue of the green waste bin has been the most popular issue with her constituents.
The cost of the service has not been finalised, but is expected to cost between $60 and $80 per year, which works out to be $2 to $3 per collection.
Information brochures on the new service will be sent out to people early next year.
The new bins will be delivered in mid 2007 and the new green waste service is set to start on Sunday, 1 July.
