ST JOSEPHS College has worked hard to become an expert in boys’ education, with teaching staff regularly engaged in a variety of professional learning opportunities.
In 2004, St Josephs was honoured to be officially recognised as leaders in boys’ education when it became a Boys’ Education Lighthouse School.
As part of this initiative, the college developed a cluster with a number of Catholic Primary feeder schools.
The aim was to develop best practice in the teaching of academic and social-emotional literacy skills to boys in the middle years of education (years five to eight).
Resources were developed for the sequential teaching of written literacy skills across the middle years and a peer mentoring program was produced and implemented, involving senior St Josephs students working in primary schools on specific literacy based projects.
This project has been very successful in supporting grade five and six boys to feel a greater connection to school and an increased enthusiasm and motivation to complete literacy tasks.
St Josephs is also part of the Federal Government funded Success for Boys initiative.
This involves teachers in the cluster working through a number of professional learning modules which will inform boys’ education based projects in the future.
St Josephs College is excited at the prospect of continuing to work closely with its primary feeder schools in an endeavour to share its collective wisdom and increase its knowledge to create the best practices in boys’ education.
