A NEW fire access track will be built in Cockatoo just in time for the coming bushfire season.
Cardinia Shire Council last week announced $28,864 funding for several fire prevention projects in the region.
Cockatoo will get a new fire access track, while other projects include new water tanks in Bunyip and Upper Beaconsfield.
David Stewart, shire fire prevention officer, said the funding was great news for small townships such as Cockatoo as it would benefit directly from quicker response times and access to reliable water supplies.
Mr Stewart also said it was time for people to start preparing for the bushfire season after the Fire Danger Period was declared yesterday, 30 October, several months earlier than usual.
He said it was important to start cleaning out gutters and to clear the ground of any fire hazards such as dead leaves or grass piles.
