Flying start for Maguire

By Dennis Fuller
CURRENT champ, Mango Maguire, who shot a 72 off the stick for a net 67 off his 5 handicap, dominated the first round of the Club Championship at Emerald Golf Club.
He was followed home by Edin Selimovic with 78 and a net 71 off 7, with Martin Yeats coming in with the same result.
In B Grade, skipper Rod Ward, a new inductee to the grade, is leading with his 85, giving him a net 71 off 14.
Second at this stage is Graeme Fergus with 86, for a net 67 off 19, followed by Greg Haymes’ 90, for a net 75 off 15.
C Grade is led by Graeme Lawler with 91, for a net 67 off his 24 handicap.
Next in line is Ian Scott who had 94 for a net 68 off 26 followed by Paul Thomas’ 95 for a net 74 off 21.
Golfers also competed for the September Monthly Medal where there are no countbacks, so there is a three-way tie between Maguire, Fergus and Lawler.
This will be decided using October’s Medal scores.
The August Monthly Medal was decided between Graeme Bates and Stuart Courtney. Courtney’s 72 allowed him to take home the bacon over Bates’ 82.
Nearest the pins were won by Brian Crawford on the 7th, T.D. Trollope on the 12th and Maguire on the 13th, while Leigh Morison did his usual trick and took home the cash for the pro pin on the 18th.
Next week is the second day of the three round.
